Overview

Petra is an ancient city that is carved directly into rose-coloured sandstone cliffs in southern Jordan. It was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom around the 4th century BC and became a major trading hub connecting Arabia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean.

The city is famous for its elaborate rock-cut architecture, especially the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), and for its advanced water management systems that allowed it to thrive in a desert environment.

Petra was largely forgotten by the Western world until its rediscovery in 1812, and today it is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Middle East.
