The Project
The New 7 Wonders of the World project was launched in 2000 by the Swiss foundation New7Wonders, founded by Bernard Weber. The plan was to update the list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World with seven remarkable monuments that still exist today.
While the old list was compiled by ancient Greek historians, the New 7 Wonders were chosen through a worldwide public vote. People across the world were invited to nominate the landmarks they wanted to be on the list. After several rounds of voting, a shortlist of 21 finalists was created, and the official seven were announced on 07/07/07 at a ceremony in Lisbon.
The people chose:
- The Great Wall of China
- Petra in Jordan
- Christ the Redeemer in Brazil
- Machu Picchu in Peru
- Chichén Itzá in Mexico
- The Colosseum in Italy
- The Taj Mahal in India
The project aimed to promote global cultural awareness, celebrate human achievement, and encourage the preservation of global historical monuments. Despite the voting process not officially being endorsed by institutions like UNESCO, the campaign managed to draw massive attention from the public towards world heritage and tourism, with hundreds of millions of people involved worldwide.
Today, the New 7 Wonders list is widely recognized as a modern cultural reference highlighting some of the most significant architectural and historical landmarks on Earth.
