Overview

Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan city located high in the Andes Mountains of Peru at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. It was built in the 15th century during the reign of the Inca emperor Pachacuti.

The site consists of precisely constructed stone buildings, agricultural terraces, temples, and observatories. Its exact purpose is still debated, but it is believed to have served as a royal estate, religious site, or astronomical centre.

Abandoned during the Spanish conquest and hidden from the outside world for centuries, Machu Picchu was brought to international attention in 1911 and is now one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the Americas.
