Overview

Christ the Redeemer is a monumental statue of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro from the summit of Mount Corcovado. The statue stands 30 meters tall, not including its 8-meter pedestal, and its arms span 28 meters.

It was completed in 1931 and was designed as a symbol of peace, Christianity, and Brazilian cultural identity. It is built in the Art Deco style, and made of reinforced concrete and soapstone.

The statue has become an international icon of Brazil and one of the most recognizable religious monuments in the world.
